This recent installation in Grappenhall, Warrington brought a proper period centrepiece back to the customer’s living room. A classic pairing of white marble, black cast iron and a living flame gas fire.
What we fitted
The surround is Carrara marble, bright white with soft grey veining, with carved corbels supporting the mantel shelf. Inside it sits a cast iron insert with decorative floral tiled panels either side of the fire, housing a coal effect gas fire. The whole installation stands on a honed black granite hearth.
The materials
Carrara marble has been the classic choice for fireplace surrounds for generations, and each piece has its own unique veining. The cast iron insert brings the traditional character, with the glazed tile panels adding colour and detail. Honed granite gives the hearth a soft sheen rather than a mirror polish, which suits the period look and stands up to daily use.
The finished result
The contrast between the white marble, the black iron and the deep granite hearth gives the room a striking focal point, and the gas fire means real warmth at the turn of a switch. The customer now has a fireplace that suits the age and character of the house while being easy to live with every day.
